Count and Posey. One of my all time favorite pictures!
It has taken me a long time to finally get this page started. I have never in my life found a bond with
a dog or animal for that matter like I had with Count!
There are no words and when you saw the way he looked and me there were no words needed he GOT IT TOO!
I am sure it will take me several days if not weeks to get through his story so if it seems to be left hanging it is because
I could not continue to type through my tears!
October 2008 I had received a call from a woman who had heard a breeder was needing to "get rid" of some of her dogs. I called the woman and she proceeded to tell me about 5 to 6 dogs she no longer was breeding and with her "health issues" could not care for them anymore! I called her again the next day to confirm plans to make the trip to pick up some dogs and now she had 8 to 9 dogs that she would let go. RED FLAG AND ALL THE BELLS WENT OFF IN MY HEAD! We had only been rescuing for about 6 months but I knew this was going to be a whole lot worse then it sounded. This was a small puppy mill she was running I was certain!
On October 20th we made our first trip. I was horrified to show up and see at least 30 dogs running in a pen outside. They were dirty, all of them had long nails, three of them had obvious physical problems and several had obvious skin issues! Then I spotted Count. I had seen Chocolate Dapples before but he stole my heart. He had these big ears and eyes that melted my heart.
THEN he walked over to one of the dogs that was pooping and ate the poop. I thought wow remind me not to kiss that dog!
So the woman comes out and as we start talking she is loading dogs in the car so fast that it is hard for me to keep track of the dogs she was loading up. It was obvious she just wanted up out of there before we saw more than we needed to see!
That day we left with 13 dogs including Count.
On the way home one of the dogs kept crying. We stopped several times and let the dog who was crying (Count) out to see if he needed to pee etc. Nope he just did not want to be in that crate so I told Gregg just let him sit with you. I cant drive five hours listening to that. So Count got his way and ended up in Gregg's lap. Not one minute back on our way Gregg rolls down the window and starts to gag. I pulled over and he handed me Count and said Holy *HIT that dog smells dead, I cannot hold him! I said I will hold him and set him on my lap. I opened his mouth and his teeth were black. They were so compacted with poop and dirt that you could barely see his gums. He smelled really bad! I didn't care I just cleaned up what I could and rolled down the window! I knew from that second I was going to change Counts life and would be getting every dog from that woman!
We went back just four days later and took the other 15 dogs.
I could make a list of all the problems that each dog had but that would take up the whole page!
The day after Count arrived I made his appointment for his teeth to be cleaned and be neutered! $352.00 later Dr Aaron Schetcher came out and handed me this medicine bottle. I assumed it was medicine but it wasn't! It was his teeth. Every single tooth in his mouth had to be pulled out but three of his canines! I was mortified! How was he supposed to eat?
Oh the pain he must have been in. I was speechless and in tears!
TIME FOR A BREAK TOO MANY TEARS!
